Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you accept insurance? Why or why not?

Renew Counseling does not accept insurance for counseling. It may be possible to be reimbursed by your insurance company by submitting your paid invoices. Not all insurance policies will reimburse your mental health payments. Clients are encouraged to look at their policies or reach out to their insurance company, inquiring whether "Out-of-network Mental Health Providers" are covered and at what percentage.

Renew Counseling does not accept insurance for a number of reasons.

  1. Often insurance companies determine the course of treatment and the number of sessions for clients. We believe this is best decided by the professional with years of training and the client who is experiencing the issues.

  2. Insurance companies require a diagnosis to warrant treatment. The stigma of many of these diagnoses can remain with clients for years, if not for life.

  3. The red-tape for insurance can cost more than what is paid back from the client.

  4. Often the cost of counseling that Renew charges is similar to the co-pay from the insurance company.

If you prefer to work with someone who accepts insurance, please consider consulting your insurance company's list of providers.

What should I do if I cannot afford counseling?

There are a number of options for clients looking for help with the cost of counseling.

  1. Consider coming to counseling every other week.

  2. Consider asking for mental health sponsors from people in your personal network. This happens more often than one might think. There are people in your life who very well could be willing to invest in your mental health. Churches, family members, friends, or mentors could be someone to consider. They could pay Renew directly or offer you the money to help pay for counseling.

  3. Consider utilizing your Health Savings Account (HSA) for all or part of your counseling fees.

  4. Consider seeing a Student Intern (in school) or Registered Intern (graduated with Master's Degree) instead of a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. Often the rates for these interns is less through the training process.

What is your rate for counseling?

Rates have been determined by Renew Counseling and Steve Graham and are reviewed throughout the year based upon training, availability, and vision for helping clients.

Individual Counseling - $120 / 60-minute session.

Couples Counseling - $120 / 60-minute session.

Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) - $120 / 60-minute session.

Executive Coaching - $1,200 for 5-week program; $2,000 for 10-week program.

Psychological Assessment - fees based upon individual assessment costs. Please reach out for more information.

How do I cancel my session?

A session must be cancelled more than 24 hours ahead of the scheduled time slot. If a client cancels less than 24 hours ahead of the scheduled time slot, the full rate is charged as a No-Show or Late Cancellation Fee. This information is provided in the client's intake packet and will be regularly communication throughout treatment.

One way that the therapist will help is to send out a reminder text message to a client the day before the scheduled session. This is the perfect time to simply text back that he or she cannot attend, avoiding a late-cancellation or no-show fee.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes.

How do you bill sessions?

At the conclusion of each session, your therapist will create an invoice and collect a payment (from your Credit Card on file, check, or cash) for that day's session. Payments are due on the day of the session.

Why is counseling so expensive?

It is important to share that Renew Counseling and Steve Graham both aim to keep counseling as affordable as possible. The average rate for counseling in Central Florida is $150-$175 per session. Steve Graham and Renew are currently well under this amount.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the cost for counseling. First, the counseling office often has overhead that must be covered by clients to keep the doors open. Second, there are numerous business expenses for the therapist. This includes insurance, taxes, training, and office supplies. Therapists see around 20-25 clients per week. This could mean that therapists might be making well below the average income for an individual in Central Florida.

Can I use my Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for counseling?

Yes. Mental Health falls under the approved items for a Health Savings Account. HSAs are often issued debit cards. Renew Counseling can charge these debit cards for counseling, by providing this card information on the Credit Card Authorization Form submitted with your Intake Paperwork or at any point during counseling. We can enter more than one Credit Card on file. The client can inform us which card should be charged for a specific session. (i.e. "Please charge my HSA Card for today's session, but my other Credit Card for next week's session.")

Can someone else pay for my counseling sessions? (family members, company, church, etc.)

Yes. Family members can fill out a Credit Card Authorization Form to be charged upon the completion of a session. Renew Counseling is also capable of issuing invoices for sessions to be paid for with a check.
