Student Counseling Intern
The way for us to experience change in our lives is to become curious about our own stories.
Each of us has a story filled with struggles, difficulties, setbacks, victories, celebrations, passion, and love. When we find the courage to explore these stories, something incredible happens: we can be free to write our future stories together in new and meaningful ways.
Freedom comes at a cost. That cost is honesty and vulnerability. We can learn to become honest about who we are, what we have experienced, and how these experiences have influenced us. However, we are incredibly gifted at resisting this honesty.
We can live our lives with freedom and awareness. We can begin to see patterns which hold us back, predicting our choices. There are reasons why our relationships are difficult, professions are a struggle, and life seems just out of reach. We all have strategies we have adopted to help us survive, but they lock us into our choices. Many of these lessons were learned very early in life. By walking back through our stories, we can become aware of how life has shaped us, how our brains have interpreted past circumstances, and the strategies we have innately adopted in order to make sense of it all.
On the other side of this awareness is an understanding that we are built for this struggle and can engage this life with more resources, more freedom, and yes, more joy. In this way, counseling is less about fixing something and more about finding something together.
There are answers. They begin with great questions and the courage to begin the journey. So, let’s begin.
